Lucerne, a fodder plant, belongs to the legume genus and is used in zoological gardens as additional food for many grazers such as rhinos and giraffes. Lucerne is a type of feed that is very rich in structure and fiber and has higher levels of vitamins A, B6, D and E than conventional feed. This increases the well-being of the animals. Alfalfa is ideal for making hay. After cutting, the plant is chopped (30-40 mm) and dried, either in the field in warm weather or with a computer-controlled dryer. The residual moisture should not exceed 4%. This is ideally checked with a moisture analyzer. The result can be read accurately and immediately. This check prevents the formation of mold in the food.
