Sewage treatment plants

Wastewater treatment plants are essential facilities for treating municipal and industrial wastewater to protect the environment, and especially water bodies, from contamination. Current challenges include the introduction of a fourth treatment stage to remove micropollutants such as pharmaceutical residues and industrial chemicals. In Germany, 54 wastewater treatment plants are already equipped with this additional stage, and more are in the planning or construction stages. Furthermore, phosphorus recovery from sewage sludge is gaining importance, as phosphorus is a limited nutrient essential for agriculture. According to the amended Sewage Sludge Ordinance, operators of larger wastewater treatment plants are required to recover phosphorus starting in 2029. These developments promote environmental protection and resource conservation.
