Dark field microscopy examines the appearance, activity and functionality of the vital blood, especially the red blood cells (erythrocytes), but also the leukocytes and other structures in the blood. For a usable result, it is essential to use a microscope that can achieve at least 1000x magnification, only then can the examination provide information.

Both alternative practitioners and some naturopathically oriented doctors use the method of dark field microscopy in their practice. This is mainly a diagnostic procedure of the holistic view. A qualitative assessment of the blood is carried out. (In contrast to medicine, which makes a quantitative assessment).
