Monitoring the salinity of groundwater
View all other applicationsApplication Description
The salinity of surface water and groundwater can be determined quickly and reliably. Regular monitoring is an important component of sustainable groundwater management, as it is the only way to detect and assess changes in the freshwater/saltwater boundary layers at an early stage.
Additional information
Elevated salt levels in groundwater pose a serious problem, particularly in agriculture, for example, due to salt mining in the surrounding area or salinization resulting from intensive irrigation. Excessively high salt concentrations can reduce crop yields, damage soils, and permanently impair groundwater. Therefore, continuous monitoring is essential. The salt tolerance of cultivated plant species must also be considered. In Germany, legally binding limits apply to drinking water according to the Drinking Water Ordinance, such as 250 mg/L for chloride, 240 mg/L for sulfate, and 200 mg/L for sodium. Regular measurements provide the necessary data to protect water resources in the long term and manage them effectively.
