Additional information
The term in-vitro ("in the glass") describes organic processes that take place outside of a living organism. Cell cultures of human or animal origin can be grown using in vitro methods. Even complex three-dimensional tissues such as skin or blood vessels can be recreated in vitro. Cell cultures are suitable both for researching diseases (examinations of wound healing or of the cell tissue in tumor diseases) and for immunological, virological or toxicological tests. For this purpose, the corresponding tissues are placed in the nutrient liquid of a Petri dish under microscopic control. Due to the three-dimensionality, it is important to use a microscope that displays specimens with a focus on the spatial impression to ensure the best possible and most accurate placement.
